Crown or Bridge?

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is the cap your dentist will place over the tooth, to restore it to its normal size, shape, colour and function.

Crowns can be used to strengthen teeth, improve their looks, or to give your teeth a shiny white look.

Dentists opt for crowns when cavities become too large to be restored with normal fillings. Dental crowns are also useful for repairing worn or cracked teeth, following root canal treatment, or to conceal blackened teeth.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is used to bridge the gap created by a missing tooth. Supported by existing teeth, or by implants, dental bridges can be made from a metal alloy, porcelain, ceramics or even gold.

Your questions answered

How is a crown fitted?

An existing broken or decayed tooth is filed down, and the crown is fitted like a cap over the existing tooth structure.

A bridge is a false tooth connected by two crowns. The bridge, or false tooth, is cemented into place, and works just as well as your normal teeth.

Crowns and bridges are used as dental solutions for a range of issues affecting our teeth.

Dentists will use crowns when:

  • You have broken or damaged a tooth
  • Your tooth is weakened by decay
  • Your tooth is changing colour
  • Your tooth has an odd shape
  • You need a bridge

Dentists will use bridges when you require a new tooth, usually when dentures are unstable, uncomfortable or unsightly.

Now that you have added strength to your smile through a dental crown or bridge, it is important to ensure you maintain oral health to ensure your crown lasts for years to come.

  • Avoid chewing on items that arent food! Stay away from pencils, nails, bottle tops, or anything that isn’t food.
  • Use a mouth guard at night. Mouth guards are great for protecting your teeth against rubbing, grinding and clenching.
  • Avoid hard candy or sticky food. Crowns are strong but can still be damaged if not looked after, avoid chewing ice, hard candy, as well as chewy or sticky foods that can make your teeth ‘stick’ together. these foods can also crack , weaken or loosen your crown.
  • Brush and floss. Regularly. Even though a crown may be an ‘artificial’ tooth, it still needs regular care to stay secure and healthy. Regular brushing and flossing will ensure germs and particles aren’t trapped between teeth, your new dental crown, and gums.
  • Visit the dentist regularly.
